Fuel Part...Its hard to get...

Hey Guys, I posted this question at another forum but did not get the entire scoop so....

I broke what I think is my Liquid check valve located in rear drivers side fender well. The only replacment part I could find was pointed out to me at http://www.willys.net/html/fuel.html . I am wondering if this thing can be bypassed and exacttly what it's function is?

check valve

You need an outside vent for air/vapours to enter and exit due to heating and cooling of the fuel in the tank, But because Jeeps see an unuaual ammount of off camber use, we really don't want the liquid gas pouring out onto the trails. this valve eliminates the anticipated problem.
I did bypass mine when I restored it, I think that I'm gonna put one in again.
