Fuel float next to fuel tank

I just pulled my fuel tank on a 1973 Cj5 and found something that I'm not sure what it is. It's some type of float that is (was) attached to the fender behind the drivers side wheel house. It's made of plastic and has a float and needle valve in it. It has 3 fuel hose coming from it. Does anyone know what this is? and do I need it?

Rollover Check Valve on left and the Liquid Check Valve is on the right and is probably what you are referring too as pictured.

Thats it! The Liquid Check Valve. Do I need this? I was thinking of putting a high capacity fuel filet in its pace.

Yes you need it and don't discard it as they are almost impossible to find a replacement for. You local California DMV wouldn't allow your Jeep on the street without it as it is part of the emissions system and prevents fuel spillage in the event of a rollover.
