If you can find a later CJ being parted out, get the hubs-out assembly on a 6-bolt caliper bracket model ('77-'78, I think) or the knuckles-out assembly on a 2-bolt caliper bracket model ('79+).

Since most of us don't easily come across CJs in the bone yard, next best thing would be to do the Chevy conversion. You're going to need to salvage the caliper bracket, caliper and brake hose off of a '73-'87 1/2 ton Chevy 4wd pickup or K5 Blazer (some models even go up to '91). Next you'll need to buy a pair of 1-1/8" '77-78 CJ5 rotor from a place like Quadratech or Krage's. You'll need to have your hubs machined just a hair, and you'll need new studs for the rotors. Here is a great article:

The nice thing about the Chevy setup is that you end up with a brake system designed to stop a 6,000lbs+ truck in a Jeep that weighs half that much. Here is a pic of the Chevy setup on a CJ5:

By far the easiest is to just find an axle with discs and swap axles. Quick and relatively painless.
