Front Axle CJ5
I currently have a Dana 30 on the front of my 1975 CJ5. I am looking to go to a DANA 44 or 60, with the plan to convert to disc brakes. What front axle should I be looking for? I am not going to be rock crawling but I plan on doing some offroad. What are the downsides to converting the Dana 30? I have a 351 Cleveland motor and a 4-speed mach 1 tranny. I have a Ford 9inch rear axle.

I guess you have to decide what size tires you want to run. The 60 would allow you a much larger tire, but in my opinion the 44 is plenty of axle for the CJ5. Ideally your not going to want to run 37's unless your doing some extreme wheeling.
Downsides? I don't see any downsides besides cost! The D30 front is weak, especially with a 351 supplying the power! Go for it! |

If you can get the D60 for a resonable price go for it otherwise the 44 is plenty for that motor. What size tires and what kind of off roading are you going to be doing? Thats going to decide if you want to go for the D60.

I have 35's right now I don't think I want to go any bigger... I am probably going to go with the 44 and do a disc conversion.. thanks for the advice. What should I look for when searching for a 44 for my model of jeep?

It has to have a diffrential on the passenger side and it will probably have to be narrowed.
