Front axle bearings Dana 30

My Jeep maintenance adventures continue.......

When I make a sharp turn, such as at an intersection, my front end now wants to take a hard dive to the right! I then have to hold the steering wheel to the left until I straighten back up. Otherwise everything is fine, drives great down the highway, no vibrations or erratic steering.

I raised the front end onto jackstands and checked for play in the front wheels. When I grab the tires at 12 and 6 and shake up and down there is a little play (I'm guessing maybe 3/4" play).

Is this too much play? Could this be causing the hard dive when turning? Do I need to replace the axle bearings? What else could be causing the hard diving?

Any help would be appreciated!

To my knowledge there should not be any play. The inner and outer bearings on the spindle are tappered so when the spindle nut is tightened, the hub gets sandwiched in between and rides on the bearings. If the ball joints are OK, pull the wheel off and manual locking hub and check the spindle nuts. You should not be able to spin them by hand. If they are tight I would pull the hub off and check the bearings.

This is a very common occurence when the front axleshaft ujoints are worn out and binding up. It could be a sign of bad balljoints also. If it were me I'd start with the easiest and cheapest place first and pull the axleshafts. No effort should be required to move them.

Thanks to everyone for the help! I will jack it back up and pull the wheels off and see what I can find.

This is a great forum! I really appreciate the advice!

I will post anything that I find.

Well I finally got a chance to pull my front right hub to check the bearings............and found that the inside bearing was shot.

Replaced both bearings on the front right..........checked the left and found that the bearings are good, just repacked them and reinstalled hub making sure to torque everything correctly on both sides.

Thanks again for the advice and pointing me in the right direction!

Terry
