Ford 302

ok so I am just wondering why more people dont use a 302 or 351 ford motors. i read about 350's all the time. is there something that makes it difficult or whats the deal? I only ask cause i found an old bronco with a 302 built to the friggin hill for $700. thinking about dropping that into ole bertha. Just curious why it seems chevy motors are more popular.

To each his own... I have seen Ford engines in Jeeps seemed to work well as far a I could tell. I'm going Chevy because that is what I got and I was able to come up with enough Jeep oem part to modify for the conversion.

All Blue Oval here:




Ford Racing GT40 5.0L, 'B' Cam, 24# injectors, 65mm TB, GT40 tubular intake, 3/8" spacer, FRP headers, MSP distributor/wires/coil, 160 amp 3G alternator, Ford T18 adapted to Tera'd Dana 20. MORE motor mounts, TDK skidplate/crossmember, 4.56 gears, dual ARB's, 1pc Mosers. 23 gallon TrailQuest tank, Hack Fab'd intank fuel pump and braided -6AN lines , VANCO hydroboost, Wild Horses Saginaw PS bracket/pump.

And the list goes on, and on, and on....

Is is cheaper than a Chevy? I don't know. But in my 'hood the availabilty of running SBF engines versus SBC engines make is a no-brainer.

Pretty much what he said. That and the fact that Chebby's are pretty much a bolt in that can be done with hand tools and a socket wrench, whereas the Ford motor takes a tiny bit more work with the motor mounts and whatnot. I am doing one for my YJ frame when I begin that project in a few months.

When my 258 pukes I've got both a 351w and a 350 chevy sitting in my garage ready to go.
The Ford is gonna make it in the jeep though because I've also got a nice t-18/dana 300 combo to put behind it.

I think it just comes down to what the individual has available to use and personal taste.
Both small blocks are amazingly good motors and are about the same difficulty of swap.

I also opted to go with the Ford because I bleed blue. No problem with a lack of power and having fuel injection is awesome. You can check out details in my current build thread.

The Ford is actually the easier swap, but the Chevy has a bit more (quantity) & less expensive aftermarket support so folks assume it's the better swap...perception becomes reality. Notice you don't hear much about Mopar swaps?

Actually, lot's of Jeeps use Ford small blocks!
I'd say it's the second most popular engine used behind SBC since they are simply cheaper and more available.

The small block Ford was used in nearly everything Ford produced in the 80's and 90's, but the '5.0L' engines are getting a little scarce.
They don't grow on trees like they used to...
Since the '4.6L Modular' engines have made the scene.

There are still plenty of the 5.0L engines, but I don't get them dropped off for free anymore.

Personally, If I were going to the time & expense of putting an non AMC engine in my jeep, it would be the Ford 351 Windsor engine.
350 CID, lighter than the Chevy small block, better power to weight ratio, and runs just fine as long as you don't expect the top end to get any oil (Common failing of the small block Ford)...
We've built the SBF to over 700 Horsepower still using the stock cast iron crank, so they are plenty durable...

Now, lets talk about you wanting to rape a 1st generation Bronco for a 'Built' Engine you know nothing about...
That is a VERY good way to wind up with a pile of junk for an engine!

ALSO,
The early Broncos had good transmissions (T-18) and Dana 44 front axles, Ford 9" rear axles and a VERY capable off road vehicles!

I don't believe I would cut up a early Bronco...
I might put a 4.6L with fuel injection in one and call it good!....

They sell the conversion parts to swap in a ford as well as chevy, People allways claimed it's cheaper to do a chevy engine. The 302 has really gained in popularity over the years and the aftermaket is loaded with parts for these engines at a decent price. I'm a ford man, if I was to swap to a V-8, it would surely be a ford. However I'm a big fan of the jeep straight 6 and love to build these motors. My current 258 has a holley 470 TA 4 barrel, offy intake, comp cam and header and runs very strong. It's also easy to work on. The ford 302 is tried and true, it would be an awesome motor in a jeep. They served very well in the early 66-77 bronco.

yea it just seems a lot more people use the chevy motor over the ford. ok but now for my next question. i have a t-176 that i know will bolt up to the 302. but the 302 has a c4 bolted to it now and i have been thinking about converting to an auto due to a bum knee. why dont you see any conversions done with c4 tranny?

Advance adapters makes an adapter for the C4 to Dana 300 if you want to go that route. I have a 351W with a ford NP435 and dana 300 using advance adapters kit. Works well for me.

I have a chevy 350 in my jeep and I love it. I am not bias when it comes to Ford or Chevy. The SBF and SBC have been around for years and are all good engines. There are good manuals to help any shade tree mechanic do a full rebuild. While I was home for the Christmas holidays, my Grandpa bent a rod in his 78 ford truck with a 351 in it. My stepdad pulled it apart and pounded the rod straight on a work bench with a hammer. The engine has well over 100,000 miles on it and runs like a champ still.

I'm not a Chevy guy, or a Ford guy. But I like that SBF's have a front mounted dizzy, and are narrower. However 99' and up chevy's don't have a dizzy at all, but cost and complexity can be limiting factors.
