i have an 85 cj7 laredo im considering changing out the stock square tail lights for some led round flush mount ones are they street legal or no is anyone out there running them that can tell me for a fact and any recommendations on certain brands that work better than others i would prefer to have some that just fit with the stock wiring to prevent any splicing thanks.

For ease of installation I went with these:

http://www.offroadonly.com/Products/...illights.shtml

They are not a true flush mount, but barely stick out (about 1 inch). They require no drilling or hole sawing or any body modifications. They took literally 15 minutes to install.

I am pretty sure that no matter what route you go, you will be splicing wires. I looked at tons of options for flush mount LED's and nothing was exactly plug and play. However, splicing was extremely easy and the instructions were very clear as to which wire goes to where.

As far as "street legal" goes. I am sure that it depends on your state/local ordinances. You should check with them. In colorado it is against the law to not have a license plate light. So I had to purchase and install that as well. It is also offered through O.R.O.

There was also reflective tape included in the kit to be installed at the outer rear corners of the jeep to be in compliance with local ordinances... but they don't really explain why. I didn't install the reflective tape, and was pulled over (for speeding) without anything being said about that or my lights. So most flush mounts are not legal (in colorado) without a license plate light or the reflective tape. However, I know plenty of people who have them and have never been pulled over for it. But that doesn't mean they are legal.

I really love these LED's but they are expencive. I have heard of people doing the flush mount for like $50 bucks or something. However, I am really glad I went the route I did. I have no regrets. They are insanely nice and they were insanely easy to install.

If you don't mind cutting and splicing, these are available from Harbor Freight, currently on sale for $14 ea. These are the same lights that are used on semi trailers, so they're definitely legal for use as Stop/Turn/Tail lights (SST). However, D-Bo's notes above about license plate lighting and side reflectors are valid observations. And you'll probably have to address the lack of reverse lights as well.

FWIW, I used standard 4-pole flat trailer plugs and did all my splicing on the bench. If you cut off the 4th contact, they plug right in to the factory wiring.

Warrior products has these, the smaller white ones could be used a reverse lights.

I'm running the LED rear side markers from then.

And they have this for the License plate, thought they dont list it under CJ I see no reason it couldn't be retro fitted. License Plate Bracket w/ LED Light for Flush Mount LED Tail Lights 1561

This is the way I intend to go eventually.

I got these AutoSmart KL-25105C-R Red Flush-Mount LED Stop/Turn/Tail Light with Clear Lens from amazon for $26. I have read several posts regarding the need of a different flasher relay. I installed these with a new wiring harness and had no flasher speed issues. I would post picture but haven't figured out how to change file size to the new photo post standard.
