which flex plate do I need
Question is for an 84 CJ7: 84 TF999 tranny with an 88 YJ 4.2 engine and crank....I am not sure which flex plate to order, there are different part numbers between these years. 3232138 is for 80-87 (I guess used for CJ and then YJ first year 87); and then 33004359 for 88-90 YJ.
The pics look very similar, is there really any difference? they have the same diameter and tooth count 3232138 (Makco A300) ![]() 33004359 (Makco A310) ![]() this is the Makco catalog link: http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=2&Category_Cod e=FLYcatalogAMC

I'm going through this also. I know the starter has a shorter bendix for the 88' YJ motor. It looks to me that the flex plate is closer to the block. Not sure if it's the crank or flex plate.

I forget what the real name of it is and will have to go look it up now. Last time I remember discussing this was like 10 years ago on the AMC-List. ![]()

So now I went to mock up what I have to see if the flex plate is correct for my 88 block/84 tranny combo. Everything bolts up but I am not convinced that the starter I have is correct for the original CJ flex plate. My ring gear is almost a full 1" from the block face and that puts the ring gear teeth on the far outer part of the starter throw...here's some pics, does it seem correct?? I am thinking maybe if the YJ flex plate is a bit closer to the block then it may work better than this:
