finished painting frame with por 15

Finished the frame this week. after fixing some trouble spots I scrubed with the marine clean, rinsed well and dried with towels and a hair dryer. Then I sprayed with the metal ready acid, rinsed and dried, I had to leave the metal ready on for a bit too long about an hour.... but it didnt seem to make a difference. I let the frame then sit in the shop with a de-humidifier running, Its been raining here for about a month pretty much non stop.
the next day I brushed the por 15 on in two coats. The por was a breeze to paint , it just soaked right into the metal. the second coat was kinda tough... tricky to get it at the right time. Glad I wore gloves! freckled my face a bit. I used a coffee scoop to tranfer the por into small glass jars.
when the second coat was tacky I dusted it with xo rust primer and let that set for the night. painting took me about six hours. the prep about four.
the following day I brushed on a satin black xo rust enamel. It sucked to brush and has still to dry fully (two days) and took forever. If I could do over again I would have top coated emediately with the por chassis black, but I needed to save a buck on the uv protection. the por 15 stuck like crazy and is hard as a rock.
I am glad that I used the marine clean and metal ready, Its good stuff!

Looks great. Yeh, that POR-15 is some tough stuff. I remember working with that stuff when I was rebuilding, and I spent many weeks with my hands/arms covered in that stuff because it wouldn't come off no matter what. It just takes time for that stuff to come off your body...

Looks great! I see you learned the plastic-under-the-lid trick with the POR 15 can. I made the mistake of putting the lid back on without plastic once. Had to punch a hole in the lid the next time I wanted to use that can.

this xo rust top coat will not dry. Its been days and I can still peel it off with my fingernail. It is soft underneath. Damn I wish I would have spent the extra 40$ on chassis coat.

Another tip I came across said that before you put on the lid, (with plastic wrap), stick your Mig welder tip in there and spray it with Argon. Displaces oxygen. I have a can that's about 8 months old and still workable!

I have been thinning the POR 15 that I have been using latley. It makes it easier for me to work with especially for second coats. I wa sthinking that it is probably totally a personal preferance of the way I like it to behave. But it's weird stuff and it dosen't act like normal paint.

How much of the POR-15 did you use? I am trying to figure out how much I need to order. I don't want to end up with a whole bunch left over but don't want to be half way done and run out either.

I bought one of those 6 packs of the tiny cans. For my frame, I used about 4 of them. Maybe 5.
