fastest you've driven your CJ??
Curious as to the top speed that some guys have got their rigs up to, on or off road?? I had the beast's speedometer pegged at 85 on I-80 a few days ago, but know I had to be pushing a buck...Still had rev's to spare too-but man was it scary..

CJ OWNER FOR LIFE

When I bought it, I chose to leave my CJ in stock condition and only improve on things that wouldn't detract from the factory look. It has performed well above my expectations. That said, I have stock springs, 265/70/R15 AT's, 3:31 gears and RS9000 shocks. Engine is stock 258 with Carter BBD and all emissions in place. Transmission is T-5 in 5th of course. I consistently drive 75 to 85 on the interstate with a very stable feel (toe in and other alignment is all good). I can let go of the wheel and it tracks straight. I can really push it and hold 85, but I did get to 100 once or twice. (following a Corvette and estimated from increase in RPMs after needle was pegged). At this speed, it started getting a little touchy and I don't really wish to push it more. Most CJ's are old, lifted, or running with factors that make each one have it's own "safe speed." Some have heard me say this before, but I have a CJ-6 that I will not go over 45/50 in.......it's a different creature. I would not recommend going that fast in a CJ (or any car/truck) that you didn't know or understand it's condition AND driving and handling characteristics.

The better question is, "Has anyone survived a high-speed rollover in a CJ?"

I survived a 35mph rollover in a curve.
Jeep had 33x12.50 tires. It started to go wide to the right in a left hand curve. I had to steer left pretty hard and would have been in the left lane but there was a car coming so I had to ride it out. It rolled on it's right side at least once completely and landed upright. It looked like a bomb exploded with anything that was inside scaattered on the ground. The hardtop broke like an eggshell. There was a machete that was behind the rear seat that ended up hanging thru a bootlace on the full rollbar(lifesaver!!!) just behind the driver's seat. I stayed in my seat (no seatbelt, the mounts rusted out).

I just survived a 30mph nearly head on collision in my CJ...the Jeep didn't. When it was running, I had no problem with 70-75 on the interstate.

I know whaty you guys are thinking, but I sometimes drive mine all out on the interstate when there is no traffic....my girlfriend clocked me at 101 on a flat level stretch.
PLEASE NOTE: My suspention is very tight My tires are 33x12.50 No clue what gears Performance upgrades are: HEI, Weber 32/36, and a header. Hopefully I wont find out what a high speed roll will be like!!! Dave

When I'm reading your replies I'm afraid, I will have finish my 79' cj 7 restoration within 3 next month. And with the 300HP 350 chevy + 4" 33x12.5 mud.
I hope it will be stable on the road up to 75 MPH. |

Nuts
I have had my stock 76 CJ5 (304/3spd man) at a whoppin 85......ONCE !!!
And that ain't happinin again soon. I'm sure the power is there to do well over 100, but not with me in it. She's solid as a rock and all, but with an 89" wheelbase, it's just plain stupid to drive that fast. No insult meant to those of you who are speed demons, but I'll save the speed driving for my muscle cars. |
