Factory paint

I have an 86 red cj and have a detailer friend of mine questioning if it is single stage paint or not. I thought tht all cj's were painted single stage?

That's my understanding, as well.

I know my '81 was single stage.

Come to find out it appears my jeep had a clear coat installed over the single stage either in the late 80's or early 90's. The only spot that my friend could get paint to come off when cutting was the hood where it looked like oxidation. Everywhere else, nothing. Anyone ever seen this before?

It depends on what 'red' color your CJ is whether it is clear coated or single stage enamel.

Garnet red is clear coated metallic.
Sebring red is single stage enamel.
