exhaust manifold heat riser

the idea behind this thing is to let the engine warm up and then the flap open to allow the exhaust gas to flow to the system...right?
mine seems to be stuck...have to turn it with a wrench...
once the engine is warm it makes a terrible rattling sound...
should i be working on freeing it up or repalcing it...or do i even need this thing?

Yeah, the manifold heater (under the carb) is used to heat the fuel mixture up when you run the engine below 160 degrees.

It's controlled by a switch on the manifold that goes to relay.

well you dont "need' it to run but it does help by preheating the fuel

but if you had to wrench turn it- its normally frozen and replacement is the cure

well it wasn't the riser....
took that out...freed up the egr while i was at it...
but the knocking remains...only once the engine heats up...
manifold gasket ,.... bad exhaust valve....
any ideas...
