Which engines interchange?

Can you jerk a 258 engine out and bolt in a 304? I know the engine mounts would need to be different, but other than that is it the same bellhousing pattern?

yes, the bellhousings are the same. In fact any AMC v8 will bolt up (post '70).

Shoot.. Waggies, Full size Jeep trucks, AMC Muscle Cars.. any AMC V8 is a pretty easy swap.

Cool. Mine has the TF999 transmission I believe, and my 258 has weak oil pressure. I thought if it ever scattered on me I'd just drop in a v8. Funny thing is, the engine runs super smooth. No knocks or strange noises. But even with a new mechanical gauge, it only holds 20-25lbs going down the highway, and 0 at idle. From the posts I've read it seems alot of people have that problem. I think the v8 swap is how I'll fix mine. Thanks

IMO, you are not gaining much by swapping in a stock 304 for your stock 258. Grab a 360 if you want an AMC V8.

Otherwise, sit down and 'run the numbers' on rebuilding/replacing your I6, versus converting to V8 status.
