engine / tranny swap question

Ok, don't got a CJ, had one a few years ago , dont got one now, wish I had, anyway.
What I do have is a 83 cherokee (last year for the big ones) that has a 258, 4.0 head and HEI dizzy, mated to a T176 4 speed mated to a NP 208. I am thinking about swaping in 99 Cherokee 4.0 engine and maybe drive line.

I am asking this of the CJ folks because like me, you guys have the 258/T176 combo. Would I gain anything by keeping the Auto tranny (AW4 I think) and the transfercase (np 231) that is mated to the 4.0 now? I am looking at buying the complete 99 Cherokee for this swap. Or should I try and mate the 99 4.0 to my T176/NP208 combo? Thing is, if this makes sense to anyone, the 99 4.0 is a OBD II, would I be able to make this work with the T176/NP208 setup?

thanks for any info

What do you use, or going to use your FSJ for? Towing, crusing, playing? I would pitch the I-6 and opt for a AMC 360 V8, with a 5 speed tranny (I don't mind shifting), and Dana 300 tc, but that's me. I wouldn't want to go through the headache of transfering the electrical/OBD II sensors, and other stuff. I like to keep it simple.
Later, T.J.

I would keep the 258. One of my friends has one in his 77 and he drove that thing across the country, getting like 18mpg in a 1977 vehicle. It's got enough power to be fun. The T176 will physically bolt right up to the 4.0. You'll need to get a CPS from somewhere like Hesco that works off the balancer in the front rather than the flywheel/flexplate. I'm not sure what else will need to be done other than things like O2 sensors and such. I would keep the manual personally, the 258 has enough power for the vehicle but I don't know about with an auto. Plus it's just cool to have a straight 6 sometimes, it surprises people.
