Engine swap

1955 cj5. Would like some solid advice how to swap my 4 cyl to a strait 6 out of a 1996 xj. Want to keep the stock 3 speed that's in it. Has overdrive added to trans. Hope there is a bellhousing adapter out there someone knows of. Thanks

I don't think the 4.0L inline 6 is going to fit in your '55 without some major modifications.

AMC lengthened the front clip of CJs in the early 70's to accommodate the longer I6 engine.

I think a V6 would be a better choice for you.

Sorry, like Matt says, it is too long to fit. Jeep used a Buick V6 in some, but. I am not sure what they had to do to make that fit as far as body mods go.

OP, your overdrive would be attached to the transfer case, not the transmission.

The later, even fire Buick V6s are a good swap option as is the Chevy 4.3. Neither require body modifications.

You also have the option of a modern 4 cylinder.
Either the V6 or modern 4 will be an upgrade in power from the existing F head. Rear wheel drive Buick V6 engines are getting hard to find. The better choice would probably be a V6 Vortec.
Adapters for standard Ford and Chevy engines are available. Remember, a swap will require more than a simple bolt in, however, a 4 or V6 would minimize the effort.
Also be aware, the stock steering and brakes are marginal at best. Getting your rig up to 65-70 MPH with the new motor may very well push your existing systems outside their safety envelope.

Would second the V6 Vortex.
Hot Rod magazine has a good write up on carbureting the Vortex
using an Edelbrock 4 bbl carburetor intake manifold.
Vortex V8 may also fit in short nose body configuration.

Buick 231, 225, or 4.3 V6 is going to be the best bet. An inline will never fit in the engine bay. Personally, I'd go with the 4.3 and keep the efi.
