Engine Swap

Got a question. I just bought my first jeep, 1979 CJ7 straight 6 and a 3 spd. I am putting on a pro-comp 4 inch lift as we speak and am running 33x12.50 muds. Well my question is that I have a ford 289 sitting around, I just rebuilt my 68 fastback and out in a 347, how would that engine work in the jeep? would it be possilbe to leave the 3 spd or should I think about changing the tranny as well?

thanks in advance

Not a complicated swap, but IMO the power differential between a good running 258 and a stock 289 would not make it worth the expense.

Put a webber carb on the 258 and use a T18 4 speed that's the cats butt.
