Engine Knock ID

Getting more familiar with my project every day but came across something this morning that puzzles me. I've done searches but found nothing that relates to what I am experiencing. 79 CJ5, 258, all stock, 45K on the o.d.o. Was examining the carb with the stock air cleaner removed to see how the nozzles looked while engine was running.....noticed that at idle there was a noticeable knock coming from the passenger side of the motor. I have replaced all fluids and to correct levels, so I know it's not low on oil, etc. This only occurred with the air cleaner assembly (and associated hoses) removed. Put everything back together and started = no knock. Could someone give me the easy button answer on this? Assuming it has to have something to do with the vacuum lines, etc. being disconnected? How does putting on an after-market carb affect this? Or does a newer carb have some type of delete for the rat's nest of lines that are part of the stock system? Best,

Does it go away when you speed the engine up?
Does it get worst when the engine is hot or cold?
Need more info.
What weight oil are you using?
You sure that's not 145K miles on the engine?

Have'n you along, is like loose'n 2 good men
