Engine Hoist Rental?

Are there any major chain companies that will rent you a cherry picker?

I know I can get one at harbor freight tools for like 200 but I have no storage and I really only need it twice! Any ideas?

Here in Missouri, Autozone rents them free with a deposit...

I have my own, though.

I just picked up an engine hoist(cherry picker), leveler, and engine stand cheap on craigslist for my 304 to 360 swap out. This is all heavy duty stuff used once and been sitting in someone's garage. Check craigslist in your area, buy what you need and than sell it later if you have no room for it. But I bet you will find more uses for this equipment that you will just find a place for it.

Good luck

Jim

Wouldn't a 1 ton be sufficient? I mean a engine trans combo prob doesn't even weight 800 pounds. 2000 lb capacity should be more then enough I should think.

The only concern here is at what length? The shop cranes are advertised with a capacity, but generally that capacity is at the boom's shortest length. Extend the boom longer to reach an engine bay or the back of my pickup, the capacity gets lower, sometimes by half. An AMC V8 weighs around 700 Lbs without transmission, I would imagine and 6 would weigh around 500 - 600?

HTH,
Dave

I vote for buying one as well. When all folded up it doesnt take up much space at all, and I have used it for more random things that I can imagine. I use it to move my tub around, lift trees out of the ground, and of course an engine or two. I use mine for everything.

I agree with chadcarter. I made mine and I use it for all kinds of stuff from engine swap to helping change leaf springs to loading a 14' boat sideways on to a flat trailer to just moving axles around the garage and other stuff. Mine doesn't fold down like most you can buy but if you can actually get a collapsable new one for 200 go for it and FIND a place to store it, you'll be glad you did!

I picked this one up at Sam's. I don't recall how much it was, but it has saved me a bunch of $$$ rather than hitting the local rental store for one. It doesn't take up much room once it's all collapsed.

Couldn't have any grease/oil at the time of that pic. You can just see the right front fender of my wife's C5 Corvette. The Vette's gone, the CJ5 took it's place:

Now there's a few spots, but the epoxy paint makes cleanup easier....
