Engine Color

Hello Group--

I am in the process of rebuilding an AMC 304 V8 for my 79' CJ-7. I have looked and looked for the engine color--but no luck. Can anyone please tell me the original block color on the old V-8's? Was is blue...red... etc. Also, wasn't the 304 a MOPAR engine?

Thanks

NOTES:
Valve covers are Rampart Red for some or all of these engines.
The 250 V-8 is believed to be the same gray as used on the 196 L-head engines
Different sources give different paint codes. Possibly used as dealer service paint of slightly different color
All 1971 California V-8's and AMC engines used in International Harvester vehicles were red in color to distinguish them from other engines on the assembly line as California engines required different emission controls.
Some Alabamma bound engines are different colors.

You can use the PPG# and get it crossed at your local automotive paint outlet. Many outlets will package the product in Spray Cans for a minimum order of 2 cans. Usually that is what you are going to use anyway.

Here's a few pictures of my recently painted engine.I used Eastwood's AMC blue spray can. From what I had read, AMC used the metallic blue(which I used) up until the early seventies.Like the info fuzz401 posted.

My blue is actually wrong for my year but I like the metallic blue better than the basic original blue.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks everyone-- what a response! In a matter of a few hours, I got the answers I have been seeking for a couple of months! I printed the pictures and will match the colors. If any of you visited my site, you can see the Jeep. I am putting up another couple of pages depicting the engine rebuild. Next... frame-off restoration!

Thanks again everyone.
