Engine casting date different from build date

Hello All,

Long time lurker of the site, finally joined. Was waiting to finish my chevy build to finally get to do a rebuilt of a jeep. Couldn't find a reasonably priced cj7 in Nevada so I opted for a a intermediate year 74..so I thought.

Here is where I need anyone to help make sense of something that does not make any sense at all.

The engine is a 232 i6. The block casting is 3224098 which is 1975.

The stamped build date code on the passenger side of the block is 711E27 which would be November 27th, 1974 when it rolled off the line as a 232??

So how could they put it together in the factory a year before the block was even poured from liquid iron?

I know one of you will have some insight.

And the VIN reads 1975 and the title reads 1974..uhg!!

Thanks for the help, one of many questions I will have throughout my build.

Thanks

Browsing this site http://www.webring.org/l/rd?ring=cj;...j_numbers.html I see where the '75-'79 258 also has the casting #3224098 (and 3227445). When I get home I will pop the hood of my '79 and see what it is. Y'know how this internet info is.

EDIT: Well, I did look and mine is 3227445.

Indeed, I checked that site as well for much of my info. I am hoping for bad internet info in this case and that that cast code 3224098 was used prior to 1975. If they even used it in 1974 it would help me sleep at night.

I know the engine plants work on the calendar year as opposed to model years, but that would not change the fact that the cast is later than assembly.

Thanks for your help Dngrs1.

Maybe the original engine blew and was replaced under warranty????

FWIW, my 1976 258 casting is 3224098, built November 7, 1975

Yep, there's always the chance that it's not the original engine in your 40yr old CJ.

It could be of course but regardless of if it was replaced it still doesn't explain how the casting date is a year later then the assembly date which both are stamped on the engine block from the factory.

The assembly date is the date they made it a 232 added carb rolled off the line. It was stamped at that point in 1974 on the block as the assembly date. Not on the heads or other swappable part etc.

Just very strange space and time issue. Chicken before the egg.

You've certainly put more effort into this quandary than I would have. Chalk it up to bad info somewhere.
