Emergency Brake Cable: how long for my lift?
Tried the search on this one but didn't really turn up any numbers.
Getting ready for a frame off restore. I'm planning to install an OME 2.5" suspension lift + 1/2" greasable shackles + 1" of body lift. Right now, there are no e-brake cables so I have nothing to go on. My rig still has the original drum brakes..probably useful information. I'm planning to replace all of the e-brake components, pedal included. 4WD has a few different choices for my year ('76): 62" OAL front, 52" OAL front, 33" for the passenger side, etc. etc. So I'm clueless about which cables to get, especially with a 4" lift on the way. I know there is a front driver's side cable, a front passenger side cable, and 1 cable for the rear end. That's about as far as my knowledge on the subject goes ![]() Also..probably a stupid question..how many equalizers do I need?.. Thanks guys. One day I'll know as much as the rest of you, I promise, haha. EDIT: Something I missed earlier when I was looking, but I guess I could use the rear cable from a CJ7? But then I still need to know what lengths to get for the front..

I am not sure I can help here, but anyway.
On the Jeeps I have seen, they have one front cable running back that splits into two cables just behind the seat. Each of these two cables goes to one back tire for the emergency brake. I have never heard of any going to the front brakes, but that doesn't mean too much seeing as I mostly see newer ones.... Normally after a lift, the front cable still works unless you go nuts with a body lift, then a bracket needs moving, the front cable end bracket. The issue is usually with the shorter driver's side rear cable and the easy fix is to just use a second longer passenger side cable for the driver's side and just tie it up out of the way.

Hmm..Alright then, I'll go for the stock cables. Can anybody tell me the lengths for the front 2 cables? I believe the driver's side is 33" but don't know the passenger's side.
Thanks guys. EDIT: Jeez I am dumb. So, you have 1 front cable that leaves the pedal and goes back. Then, as Mike said, it splits into 2 cables which each go to a rear drum. I finally get it now, but I'll post this diagram for anybody else who might be in need in the future: ![]() Last edited by syphonation; 04-20-2009 at 03:46 PM.. |

Just did my rear e brake cables recently and figured I'd throw this in. 11" brakes use rear cables with a bracket that bolts to a flat backing plate with oblong hole, 10" brakes use a round spring clip for use with indented backer with round hole. Three different parts places tried selling me 10" e cables, saying they were correct for my 11" which I think your '76 is supposed to have also. Even 4WD parts guy cross referenced the numbers and said what I got was what I needed. Nope. Someone maybe rebagged the part(s) wrong but anyhow, didn't know if you knew the difference and thought I'd pass it along to save you the aggrevation of returning stuff.
