Electrical Woes

Hey Jeep Gods. Did a ton of research on old threads, and haven't come up with any concrete answers (even though JH is amazing) to a few problems.

1) How is your battery connected to the starter solenoid, then to the starter itself, and the alternator? I have a 78 CJ-7, and the PO did a nightmare on the wiring. I can't tell for sure from the wiring diagrams in the manuals, so I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.

Currently the Battery go to the starter solenoid (start side), then ontop of that is the cable to the alternator. The Ignition side goes to the starter itself.

2) How have you ran the lights off the battery (from the light relays). I just installed bus bars, and the light relays this weekend, but I'm not 100% sure on the BEST place to tie in the bars/light relays. I've seen JH diagrams (and used them often), but that ties to the start side of the solenoid.

Currently it is tied in that way, but when driving it has caused the car to suddenly develop a weird problem. When either starting from a dead stop or shifting from a slow 1st into 2nd gear, the car now CAN shutter (as if stalling), lights die, car kicks back to life, lights on, dies/comes back for a third or fourth time and is fine. Needless to say, definitely a heart stopping moment.

3) Is the alternator supposed to be grounded? I do not believe that is right now, other than via connection to the engine block or whatever. There is a post on the back of the alternator that is not in use at the moment, and I Think it may be ground, but I'm not 100% sure. Seems straight forward, so I apologize for the dumb question.

I know there's a lot there, but hopefully there might be a few answers somewhere. Thanks guys!!
