Is it an electrical or fuel issue?

Hi all,

I am having an issue where my CJ5 304 V8 has a really hard time starting. It tries to turn over but just isn't catching. I open the accelerator all the way open and it really struggles with starting. Finally it does and will run fine for about 30 seconds. Then it struggles and seems to be really close to dieing and then it catches back and runs fine for a little bit. It does this pattern consistantly.

I replaced the fuel filter and checked to make sure I have spark(which I do). I just replaced the coil. So, I was wondering if this is a alternater issue or a fuel issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because it is getting warm out and I would really like to drive it again.

Cheers,
Rick

Do you have an electric choke? Mine was giving me problems like that and it ended up being the choke. You also may want to change your fuel filter.

Takes 3 three things to fire. Spark, fuel, air (oxygen). Sounds like it's too much/not enough of one of the later two. How's your fuel pump?

How do I check the fuel pump? That had crossed my mind. I did notice that there was a strong exhaust smell so I wondered if there was too rich of a mixture.

Had a similar issue and replaced the fuel pump, no problems after that.

I had a similar issue. ended up being the new fuel filter had no resistance to fuel flow on the return port. So the majority of the fuel was returning to tank due to the resistance of the fuel pressure regulator. I installed three different fuel pumps and beat my head on the wall before I figured it out. I see you have changed your filter but it might be worth looking into.
