edelbrock on a 304 the right way?

the previous owner of my 78 cj swapped in a edelbrock carb and intake manifold and i am starting to suspect he may not have done it right. The tranny won't kick down and i hear their is a special part for the carb. it runs really rich too. does anyone have a link to a good write up on this or at least have some insight on the kickdown thing?

What tranny are you running and also witch carb? You may need to jet down the carb. to help with the richness.

Edelbrock Carb set-up

Yes I have done many of these. The Jeep auto trans has a lickdown rod that also governs the upshift. There is aplace on the carb , or should be, to mount the rod. The rod is slotted and needs to be right on or the trans will not shift correctly. A rough adjustment is to hold the throttle wide open with the engine OFF then adjust the rod until it just contacts the pin. This is an approximate adjustment but a good place to start. Also if you are running the Edelbrock carb and mainfold:

MAKE SURE YOU RUN AT LEAST A 1/4 INCH NON-METAL SPACER BETWEEN THE CARB AND THE MANIFOLD. THICKER IF POSSIBLE.

Reason is that this setup will cause the fuel to boil in the bowl and lead to all finds of hot idle surging.

I have the T-400 out of a 76. There is NO kickdown rod, linkage, or anything else. All functions are controlled by the vacuum modulator. I have an adjustable one that let me control shift points (up and down). Kickdown is slower than the later rod actuated models but it's nothing a pull of the shifter can solve when I need to pass someone.

th th-400 kick down is controled elec by a switch at the gas peddal and the plug on the driver side of the tranny
