With scanners and Cb running with about a mile from each car we ran in packs first car was the recon. Well i was slowing down coming off the rise into barstow, back then i was still a small town, one Chevron gas station just off the freeway open. I was in my 71z28, then it was a five speed with 2:73 rear and 27 inch tires and a built 454 Ls7 45 gal fuel tank(12.5 cr). I had slowed down to about 150 and was on the binders. from up on the rise i see the CHP RUNNING to his car(must have been coffee time. The second he hits the seat the lights are on and hes leaving that gas station like something out of smoky and the bandit movie and heading for the on the ramp. I knew it was going down so I had stopped just after the on ramp waited. There was no one on the freeway but me and a few cars just minutes behind me. So I had turned the motor off, called back to warn them to back down fast. anyway, the cop pulls behind me walkes up and says," Did you know that you were going over 150mph? I heard you slowing down( gear changes at 7000rpm), in all my years I have never heard anything like that comen down the road". Me. "yes sir, i was doing about 175 and i was slowing down to come through barstow"( big grin on his face and mine.) Right at that second three cars go by at 55(thats was the posted speed in those days) all built, 1 vet, a stang and one porsche turbo.

Yes I got a ticket, for 75 in 55. He did not want to arrest me and loved the car. I had to turn it on he had to hear it at idle. Nice guy we talked about a hour. I lost the run. But i did get back before sun rise.
How much did the LS-7 set you back? Did you keep the LT-1? How in the heck did you fit a 45 gal tank in the Z? Give up all your space in the trunk?

Sorry, I'm a Chevy nut too and it's not very often I read about folks with the LS-7 in their cars....rare critter.

btw reading through this there was a argument about cops feeling like they were above the law and it reminded me of this
2 cops racing, cop hits turning car and kills a kid

I got pulled for running a stop sign making a right handed turn. The stop sign was on a hill. Went to court over it and the cop tells the judge I never stopped fully. Just rolled up to it, rolled back a bit on the hill when I let out the clutch and kept going. I politely asked him how I managed to change the direction the vehicle was moving twice and not pass 0 mph Thank you Mr.LEO for making my case

Not a CJ but a YJ. My friends father is a cop and noticed me driving topless/spotless and decides to be funny.

*Lights*
Him: Please roll down the window son
Me: ....
Him: Did you hear me? Please roll down your window.
Me: Sir?
Him: Alright smart ***. Out of the vehicle.

He then proceeds to take off his sunglasses so I realize who he actually is.

Mine was in the summer of 2010. I just left church in the middle of the day and had changed out my clothes before I left. I had my cj5 with no top or doors and my sunday suit hanging on the roll bar. Well It turned out harder than I thought to hold the suit, shift, and control my cj. Probably didn't help that I had half a turn of play in the steering lol. Had a grand cherokee on my tail and when I started to swerve a bit they backed way off.

I got all the way home and was in the shower. My mom comes and tells me there is a sheriff at the house and that I had been reported for drunk driving. Mom explains to him where I had come from and the situation. He replies that he would expect to see my jeep in a mud hole not on the road. To bad I didn't get to talk to him. Sounded like a good guy, just not so smart driver of the Grand cherokee.

Back before god made rocks (when LEOs were typically reasonable people) & before I got older and acquired a modicum of common sense...
I was going camping in the mountains after some severe weather,
I came to a place where the gravel road was washed out, rather than traveling 75 miles out of my way to go around on civilized roads, I locked in the hubs and dropped into low range then drove down into the washout and up onto the road on the other side only to meet a patrolman, who said...
"If you didn't make it through I was going to give you a ticket."

...Silly boy; I was driving a locked CJ-5.

Enjoy!

Cop hailed me through his PA system one day to "put on my seat belt right away or he was going to give me a ticket." I opened the door to my 81 scrambler and casually pointed to the lap belt while laughing at him. He just turned red in the face and took off.

I'm an avid runner and about 2 years ago i was training for the Atlanta Marathon. I had gotten dropped of 13 miles from home and was about halfway back home early in the evening when a cop comes rolling past me rather slowly. Now mind you, this is rural georgia and the county sheriff is a close family friend. Anyhow, the cop pulls over about 50 yards in front of me. As i go running by, he asks me to stop. I stop, even though i didn't want to as i was keeping a good pace and had just gotten my second wind. He says that he had a report of a theft of a tv in the area. I laughed and held out my hands and said "no tv here." He then asks me for my drivers license. I explain that i don't have my driver's license considering i'm RUNNING, not driving. So he takes all my information - name, address, etc., and pulls away. I hadn't gone another mile or two when the cop comes flying by me and pulls over in front of me, cutting me off, with his lights on. He says "Sir, your story doesn't add up." Confused and irritated, i say "which part?". He says that i don't live at the address i gave him. I say "Well, officer, I most certainly DO live at [address] and that's exactly where i'm headed." Again, he asks me for my license. I say "i'm RUNNING, i don't have my license because i'm not DRIVING!" I calm down and politely ask him to radio into the station and ask to speak to the sheriff. He does and i can hear the sheriff come in on the radio. I ask to use the radio and, after hesitating, he hands me the handset. I talk to the sheriff, again whom i know personally, and explain the situation. Shortly after the officer's cell phone rings. He answers and quickly begins talking very politely - come to find out it was the sheriff on the other line. He hangs up, tells me to have a nice night, and drives off.

The Ls7 is OLD school block not the new one. Its a MK4 ls7 454BB large D port heads 12.75CR They did not have the LS motors back in 70's-1980. That motor new was only 2300$ NEW!!! you can not buy the remote oil tank system for that in the new LS7. They never put the LS7 in any car back then it was race only, LS6's only the Chevel ss with that option, i even had to sign a waiver back then that I WOULD NEVER USE IT ON THE STREETS of CAL.

The fuel tank takes up six inches of the trunk and hangs down about even with the 12 bolt. Its massive and filling it you need a bank loan with 280gt sunoco. 100 octain. The boat guys are filling there boats and wonder where the he!! is the gas going in that camaro. I have seen guys laying on there backs under my car looking at it to see how the heck i got 45 gallons in that camaro. One says," you a rum runner, thats the way they used to run em" he was an old guy from the south. the wife wont ride in it she says its a gas bomb waiting to go off. She is right too thats alot of fuel, just to keep it from sloshing about it has three internal sections and the center one is divided in half with a section to keep fuel there in courners and braking or exceleration.

Oh and i still can fit a spare in the truck not a wide tire but one that would work if needed.

now my older sons fight over who gets it when i die. HA they will bury me in t first.

Yeah, I knew the LS-7 was a crate-only motor, just never talked to anyone who had ever bought one. I had a 1969 Chevelle SS L78/M22 in my younger days.

Wasn't in a jeep, but I had a VW Passat. Had some electrical problems and the tail light went out on the night of my 18th birthday. Got pulled over by a cop past midnight, about 5 minutes after I turned 18, told me my tail light's out, I could have gotten my license taken away if this happened 10 minutes earlier, gave me a happy birthday, and let me off.
I tried changing the light a bunch of times, figured out it was a wiring problem, so I took it to my friends place a month after that happened because he's got some wiring experience.
Within that month, I got pulled over 4 other times. They were all good cop experiences. Had some fishing rods in my back seat, so a few of them talked about fishing and good places to go to.
The last one had a heavy southern accent, new to the area, he was pretty strict but nice at the same time. Wanted to let me off with a warning about the light, but my registration expired a few weeks back (None of the other cops told me about it... Hmm) so he had to give me a ticket.
All in all, cops around here are pretty nice.
The only bad experience I had with a cop was when my house burned down as I was on my way home from school one day. The street was closed off, and one of them wouldn't let me through because for some reason, she didn't believe that I lived there, even after I showed her my license. I was freaking out because I saw an ambulance speed by, thought my family was hurt, so I ran past her and got up to the house. Turns out the ambulance was just passing through to another street. One of the senior cops had my back and told the cop that gave me a hard time to F off.

I was slowing down in a work zone and got pulled over. The officer said "the cones are not there for more excitement". I looked at him and said "they are when you're testing your ABS". He then said "Were you just testing you ABS?"
