DUMB Question. Fuel Filler neck???????
Does anyone else have trouble at the gas pump with actually getting the fuel in your CJ. The filler neck on my CJ5 has sharp curves in it. And whenever I am at the gas pump I struggle to fuel up the Jeep and never go without spilling fuel.
Does everyone experience this or am I just a putz?

Can you get under your CJ and take a picture of the fuel line(s)? Not sure if the earlier CJs had two lines or just one, but on my 84 there are two hoses - one is a breather. The angles should not be "sharp" at all but they do curve.

also, I used to have better luck turning the handleto the side. not sure why, but it usually filled much easier that way.

Yup. The vent line is not venting, causing backpressure against the fuel flow. When you turn the pump sideways, it changes the path of the fuel and allows some air to sneak by.

I'll take a picture tonight. I have tried turning the handle each way. I tried turning it to go with the curve of the filler neck and also tried the opposite. I have have the best luck filling the tank with a gas can out of my garage.
Thanks for the input guys.

Not sure about everyone, but you are NOT a putz. None of us knows everything about Jeeps. We all have a certain level of expertise and the reason forums (like this one) flourish is because we help each other. So no worries, putz

The solution will be to unblock the vent line, not play Twister at the pump.

I have the same problem. Twisting the fuel pump to side ususally helps. I know, on my 83 CJ5, my vent line is not clogged. I think the reason, we all have problems, is the vent line cannot vent, because with the pump is blocking the only escape for the air coming out of the tank. I could be wrong. Just my 2 cents. For those of you that are old like me, there were no rubber around the gas hose pump back in the 80's.
