Power to the "BATT" terminal - DONE!
When I did mine I ran power straight from the battery, through a relay with 12 gauge wire (min.). The DUI unit produces alot of firepower, so consequently it also requires alot of power. Using a relay insures that you get the maximum possible. The stock wire won't handle enough juice, but you can use it to energize the relay. I think someone posted a diagram on this once. You might want to search through the old posts.

I am taking advantage of the sale for my 304. Hope to have it installed by the end of the week.

DUI directions say to wire to the ignition, it will draw down the battery if wired direct. ask me how I know.

Let me guess. You wired it direct before reading the instructions?

Can I just use a simple mechanical relay like that ued in fog lamps installs? I wonder if this is reliable enough to be used in my ignition!!!!

What's so great about it? Is there a noticeable performance gain? CA smog legal? I've been seeing DUI popping up here and there, yet really don't know too much.

Petey,
This is probably the best way to wire an GM HEI or clone,

Since the clone HEI isn't drawing massive amounts of current, just about any discount store relay will do for you.

IF,
You connect directly to the original coil connector, the resistor is still in place, and you are limiting the current the E-core coil will receive, limiting the Spark Energy output.
IF,
You wire to the full 12 volt, but very small wires that connected to the DuraSpark ignition module, you will be limiting current to the clone HEI, and again, your spark energy output will suffer.

By using a relay with heavy wiring and a battery source, you are ensuring your clone HEI is operating at it's electrical current maximums.
---------------

REMEMBER!
If you don't use a good distributor cap with brass terminals, and a good set of plug wires, you are wasting time and money!
The idea is to get as much spark energy to the plugs as possible, and at the correct time!
Good plug wires are a must!
-----------------

Now, you may want to watch for things like...
Did your clone HEI have a distributor gear that looked like the gear on the left, or the gear on the right....?

If it was the gear on the right, you should probably keep track of the cam shaft gear when you service the engine.
There is a crop of bad distributor gears out there in the after market that are eating up factory cam gears.
The after market knows about it, but chooses to sell them anyway.

If it looked like the gear on the left, then that's a US made gear, and the correct one for your application.
If in doubt, keep a close eye on your cam shaft mounted gear for signs the distributor gear is eating it up.
---------------------

Most GM HEI and clone advance curve is way to fast for your AMC engine.
Keep an ear out for 'Knocking', 'Pinging', ect.
These are signs of detonation or way to much ignition advance!
When you can hear/ feel the 'Spark Knock' or 'Pinging' or 'Rattle' in the engine, you are doing damage to things like the head gaskets, valve stems, guides and seats, pistons, compression rings, and rod/main bearings.

Ignition firing too soon is building up too much pressure in the cylinder before the piston has a chance to reach Top Dead Center, and the crank pass over center so that pressure can be applied to the 'Power Stroke' of the engine.
Instead, the burn took place too soon, and the piston, rod, and crank is trying to be forced back down the way it came up, not break over top and go down the other side of rotation.

If you experience this 'Rattle', 'Knock' or 'Pinging', it will probably be at part throttle cruise under load...
Meaning, when you are just going down the highway and start up a hill with out giving the engine more throttle,
Or when going down the highway in high gear at part throttle (constant throttle opening).

If you experience this, don't let the engine stay in that condition! Open the throttle, slow down, shift gears, Something, but don't let that 'Rattle' continue!

Contact me and I'll help you through the process of tuning your new distributor so it doesn't do this to your engine anymore...
-------------------

Any chance you want to get rid of the old Motorcraft distributor?
If so, I'd be interested in it!

8mm plug wires (minimum) are a MUST!
