Hi there, I am new to the forum. My CJ5 just developed a shake while driving. I had a 4 inch lift put into it and the mechanic rotated the rear axle up slightly to reduce the angle. It rattled pretty good at first then stopped. It just started again only now its much worse and when I let off the throttle I can actually hear the gears hitting. When I depress the clutch the shaking stops. I'm not very familiar with the drive train part. I think I have a Dana 40 axle in the rear and a Dana 30 in the front or vise versa. Any help would be really appreciated. I checked to see if there was any play in the drive line but there wasn't any going to the rear axle. There was a slight amount going to the front.
A CJ5 with 4" lift puts a lot of stress on the drive train. Do you have a double cardigan joint at the transfer case? If not, you will forever fight this issue.
No I do not. Thanks. I will check into getting one. What does the Double Cardigan joint do? Can I damage my transfer case with out it or is it just the U joint that is shaking? Thanks for the info.
In simple terms, it's a double U-joint at the transfer case, used for severe driveline angle. You will likely need to rewekd your spring perches as the pinion needs to point directly at the TC output, as opposed to a convention driveline where the pinion angle and TC output shaft want to be parallel.
