I believe the under dash lights were a Larado thing, mine came with them. I love them combined with the hardtop dome light now trying to figure out how to put some in my non Larado CJ to.

They actually came in Renegades as well. I just pulled a set from an 84 CJ7 Renegade. Trying to figure out how to hook them up....

They were standard on the Laredo and Renegade package or part of the Convenience Group option.

Not hard to hook up, there should be a couple of leads under the dash that ALL CJ's in the 80's have. One orange colored wire for power with a black colored connector and a black 'ground' wire coming off the Headlight Switch. The black wire will connect to the courtesy lights blue wires.

IIRC the lights have 12v positive all the time. The switch completes the ground. The switches for the doors when open also complete the ground.

Interesting to know, but now you have me wondering. Mine has them, but no tach, leather, clock, etc., so I guess a PO installed the lights at some time.

What else would be in the convenience group for a 78? Repainted, new body, so no idea on if it was base model or anything more...

Convenience Group consisted of intermittent wipers, courtesy lights, underhood light, lockable glove box, day and night mirror. I'm not sure the intermittent wipers and lockable glove box were included in 1978 but became available in 1981 or 82.

Tachometer and Rally Clock were their own option but included both.

Well, I have under dash lights, and day/night mirror. So I guess I have PO installed extras. No locking glove box.

Thanks Kieth!

That's right.

The headlight switch also operates them as well when you turn the dimmer up to full brightness.

Close, but the intermittent wiper for the CJ was 1984 on as the dash harness is wired different to accept the 4 wire wiper motor which uses a different switch ( and a second option of the intermittent switch/ harness) I had about 10 CJ dash harness out at one time from 75 to 86, and when comparing the fuse boxes, plugs, and other year to year changes, I saw all the pre 84s did not come with intermittent wipers.

Wow, do you still have all those harnesses?
it would be great to take pictures of each connector for each year.

If you can get the glove box door, I have an extra lock and key.

I've got a black door that says "Loredo" on it. It's a little scratched up but you can have it if you pick it up.

What color wire off of the headlight switch would I wire to my new mirror to have the lights come on when you click the instrument dimmer all the way on?

When I wired it up I ran a third wire but it currently is just coiled up under the dash.

Thanks!

PS>> I do have a factory service manual but it is on my desk at work and I will not be back for several days and want to do this wiring while I have my down time.

Got a schematic of the mirror?

Basically you will have to run a constant hot to the light in the mirror and then the ground wire from the mirror will run to the ground lug on the Headlight switch.

If your mirror does not have a separate ground, then you would have to use a relay to switch it with the headlight switch.

I will have to figure out some other way to make it work then- I wonder if I can use a relay and use that ground off the switch to trigger the relay?

The mirror has three wires: Red (switched 12V for the courtesy lamp function), Orange (constant 12V for the map light switches on the mirror) and a ground wire. I already have the orange and black wires ran and the light is working fine off of the switches on the mirror, I just figured a "dome light" function off of the headlight switch would be cool.
