does it matter which way the cj7 front hub locking gear faces

Does it matter which way the 4 wheel front hub locking gear faces?
I think I have it the way it came out.
However, the previous owner could have had it wrong.
There is a slight inner groove one side of the gear
The other side is flat till it comes to gear teeth. This is the side you see up in the picture.
I cannot see anything the groove would do.

Also in pictures I never see the smooth lock ring I have in my jeep.
I see both rings for sale but no one show the smooth one when they show assemble an disassemble pictures.
I see only the snap ring that has the holes for the snap ring pliers.
I am assuming my jeep has original 1979 jeep cj7 304 v8 front hubs.
