do pre 81 cj7's have different axels?

do pre 81 cj7's have different axels? or are they exactly the same? The reason i ask is because i was looking to upgrading and a lot of parts descriptions say 81-86 - thanks

All the way back to 76 has the amc model 20 rearend and dana 30 front. They are a different length. The 82-86 version is refered to as the wide track version. Jeep made them wider for more stability. The pad mounts are spaced the same 76-86 . Its just the length of the axle tubes and shafts that are different.

82-86 have widetrack axles D30 front and AMC20 rear
pre 82 had narrow track and I believe a few came with the quadratrac. The quadratrac on the waggys and chiefs either have an offset 44 or 20 in the rear with 6 lugs, but I have been told the cj quadratracs were still centered (no experience there though, that's just rumor)

I don't believe the 7's ever had anything other than the 30front 20 rear except for a few in 86 when they ran out of 20's and threw a 44 in the rear. The cj5's however had a variety of 30's, 44's, 20's just depending on the years and how far back you go

I'm sure someone else here probably has all the specs posted on site somewhere, maybe they'll chime in with a link

They lied to you . The CJs with Quadratrac did come with an offset AMC 20.

Other Axle information can be found here.
