do i need a 1 peice axel

So i called the 4 wheeler shop that is local and asked about putting a locker in the rear of my jeep. i run 265/75/R16 tires and i wheel my jeep hard but have never had a problem with the axels. he told me that if i put a locker in the rear that i would have to put new axels in? is this true? i just wanna keep it as a budget jeep and 300 for new axels would suck. if i buy a lock right locker then would you say that i would have to put new axels in or would i be ok to keep the stock axels? Thanks for any help.

I think you'll strip a hub (almost immediately) if you stay two piece. A locker puts a lot of strain on things.

You won't NEED new axles but they come recomended. You'll put a little more strain on the wheel mounting surfaces and this often leads to spinning the hub on the 2 piece axles. Now with that said, I ran 2 piece axles and a lockright in my M20 for 2 years with some hard wheeling in there with no issues at all. If you torque down the hub nut to the right specs, and do it every month or so it'll seat itself real well and will be less likely to spin.

I think that the 1 piece is a good idea whether you have a locker or not. When I got my Jeep, the hub was so messed up that it wasn't stripped, it was more like it was fused on there and I couldn't get it apart, the other side was just about spun. This was original parts and the Jeep was 28 years old, so I put in 1 piece axles. I have hammered them and they haven't complained yet, so I would go with them no matter what, it just makes a lot more sense in the design and the toughness factor.

With the locker and the added forces, you can't go wrong.

I upgraded to 1 piece in the rear and I upgraded my Dana 30 to 297x ujoints with 30 spline Superior shafts when i locked my axles...

Although everyone's situation is different, odds favor a breakdown at some point in the future.
