Angry Diesel engines in CJ5's

Call me stupid, I currently run a V8 Range Rover, amongst other things, but today I was offered a CJ5 in exchange for my beach Buggy. It's a 1981 model, right hand, with an Isuzu 2.2lt diesel engine.
My question is, the man offering it say's that it was a factory fitted engine, however I have looked all over the place on the net and can not find any details of others.
Is he telling me lies, or if not are they any good/worth bothering with.
Cheers,
Neil in England.

Welcome to the JeepForum.com. It says here in a book by Bill Munro that a shipment of deisel CJ-5's was shipped to France in March of 81. It also says that an Isuzu 2.4 liter engin was chosen to go in them. Renault, the seller of said Jeeps, argued for their own 2.1 or 2.5 liters. It also says that "the choice fell, not surprisingly, on the Renault." Also in a picture caption it says "the Jeep Corperation needed a diesel engine for the export market. With the exception of France, that need was met by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder Isuzu." If it is a 2.2, then it is not the original engine. If he was mistaken and it is a 2.4 litre Isuzu, then it was not French. Unfrotunatly, it does not say where the CJ-5's with the Isuzu engines were shipped, but if it is a 2.4 then it could very well be original. As for how good they are... your on your own. I hope this gets you at least part of the way to an answer. Good luck... James.

Thanks a lot, I did manage to get an answer from Jeepworld uk, in that yes they did use the isuzu engines, around a hundred were imported into the UK by Howes uk, but they were under the impression that these were only CJ7's. The man did say that it has removable steel doors and a fiberglass hard top, which are also only CJ7 spec, so who can say what it is.
Either way, the price is right so I think that I will get it anyway.
Cheers for the help
Neil.

There were not a whole lot made, but they exist. I even saw a 60-? CJ-6 on Ebay with the factory Perkins Diesel a while back, set up for plowing. Sounds like a great combination for many uses! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
