I have a 1984 CJ7 with a straight 6 engine in it and I am in the process of rebuilding the engine. When I called the Jeep dealership, no one else had a throw out bearing, they said straight 6's weren't on any thing before 1987. How do I check this out using the VIN? There is a number on the side of the motor but I'm not sure how to cross reference it.
that guy at the dealership is a retard then cj's where known for there i6's and there dependibility. i think is is safe to say every cj7 had a i 6 as a option some came with 4 bangers and others w/ 304's 360's and 401's but i am 210% positive that cj7 came factory option of a i6

Yes, they had I6's. And for your info, they should be able to order a throwout bearing at any autoparts store. I just ordered a complete clutch kit including a throwout bearing. I know while I was looking I saw throwout bearings at autozone, advance, and all over ebay, not to memtion a ton of jeep websites.
Dude I'm not sure about if the moderators care but you would be doing other Jeepers a service and advising what dealer that was. If that is what he said, what a joke. I know I wouldn't want to take my vehicle there. There are some basic things people should know about their job.
I strongly concur with Sfisher - any dealership with that lame of a staff should be avoided like the plague! Pass their name along so your fellow Peachtreers don't waste their time there. Not that I would ever recommend going to a dealer for any vehicle over 5 years old, anyway. Labor & parts are a lot more $$ there, and their expertise ain't anything that hasn't been matched at Joe's garage on the older models after a few years.

Going to any dealer for parts is very ill-advised. I would recommend finding a mechanic in your local area who is reliable and will allow you to bring him the parts and he does the labor.
I have that with a local mechanic here and they're great. They'll call me first if something else needs worked on when it's in their shop and tell me what the part runs locally. My catalogs and resources are always in my desk drawer so I can quickly tell them if I will get them the part or they can get it locally.

become friends with local mechanics, thats what I've done, although i dont use them for labor they do call me when they have a part they think I would be interested in, and if i need one they do a good job of tracking em down for me
The jeep dealership is Milton Ruben in Augusta, Ga. I was ready to put my newly rebuilt engine back into the engine compartment and when it took the bearing out of the box to replace it I noticed it was the wrong one. I was desperate to get the engine back in last night so I called all over town before I found it at O'Riely's. During my calls is when I spoke to the dealership.
As for the wrong bearing, I'm getting real tired of Advanced Auto selling me the wrong part. That was the last straw. It also taught me to verify parts in advance instead of 10 minutes before I'm ready to use them.
