More worky less talky.

I looked at my seriously neglected Nissan and decided to do a test to see how well the paint would clean up. The first two years I owned it I kept up with the detailing but after we moved in with my Uncle it stayed muddy and all my detailing junk was packed away in storage. I have not even washed it much in the last three years but I did remove overspray a few times with Clay Magic.
You can see from the photos that the paint is heavily oxided, and there are tons of scratches and chips in the paint. I washed it, used Clay Magic to remove the majority of the overspray and then brought out the Porter Cable DA. I have only used Meguiar's products because they are generally available locally.
The difference is really noticeable in the photo looking down on the hood and comparing the hood to the fender that was taped off.
The steps I followed with multiple passes:
Medium Cut Cleaner #1
Fine Cut Cleaner #2
Swirl Remover #9
Speed Glaze #80
NXT Tech Wax
It took about 1.75 hours to do half the hood and that was easy considering it's a flat panel and easily accessible. On the other hand, the finish turned out nice for a six year old finish and worth finishing the job. I may try to borrow a polisher rather than the DA. There are a few rust spots that I need to sand down and a bunch of chips that can be filled but I don't know if I am that ambitious

That sure makes the hood look better Dave. I have a feeling the entire thing is going to get a once over here pretty quick. Time for me to sit back and learn something new.
Hope you're enjoying that Texas weather. We've got 30 mph winds and 15 degree.

Must be tough working outside in that cold 55 degrees. It has been in the lower 30's to upper 20's here all day with light snow. I hear it will be above freezing again by thursday though.

Jim, I don't plan to document this although I did post the before and after pictures to show that deteriorated paint can be salvaged to look presentable.
Ken did a great job on his Jeep and his CJ is a great example of how detailing can be an alternative to painting due to budget constraints; or, when working with a survivor that has factory paint and a re-spray would lower the value.
I am not a professional detailer, I did read a lot on Meguiar's website and experimented with different products until I found what worked well. I think my first detail was my 01 Dodge Quad Cab long bed in 2003 using Meguiar's Deep Crystal products available locally. That was a three step process (clean, polish, wax) and several days of work by hand
My Nissan will be paid off in August the girls should have their own vehicles and my CJ should be on the road. I have not decided if I will sell it to buy a used fullsize truck or keep it for the fuel mileage which is 18-19 in town and 21-23 on the highway. Either way I want to clean it up and I will not finance anything.
