That old adage measure twice and cut once is good to follow isn't it Dave. Good that you caught that before you got it all welded up. It's sure coming along great! Oh and you mean you wake up in the night thinking about this stuff too! Doesn't that just kill you when you can't get back to sleep.

On the other hand, I can't think of any reason I will take the tailgate, windshield frame or doors off the hinges unless they get damaged.
I am trying to think it through, the compromise may be to paint the tub, bolt the doors, windshield frame and tailgate on and spray everything.
Oh yeah, no progress last night...after the long weekend I went to sleep about 7:00.

Quit beating yourself up, Dave! No matter which way you decide to do it, it's going to last you another 30 years.

Well Jim, I did follow the old adage, measure twice and cut once; in fact, I measured about a fifty times. Check out the fit up below. But it helps to completely support the tub before you measure too
I don't sleep worth a darn, ever!
I changed my mind and decided to work on the cowl instead of priming. I have just a little more work on the panel and there should be plenty of time to prime the rear fenderwells and the rear bed support tomorrow and install the bed floor this week.
I didn't want to beat on the cowl and cause more damage so I bolted a piece of angle iron to the firewall and made a lever and it worked great.

What are the cool things you can make with a lathe?
Depends on whom you are talking to and their definition of "cool".
Most people that aren't shop savvy I just point to the lathe and say "that makes things round"...then point to the mill and say "that makes things square".
Then point to the welder and say "That fixes my mistakes"
Between the 3 the possibilities are endless. zkling

help with some brackets
hi dave, been following the thread since the begining. Been trying to copy most of what you are doing but i do cheat and hire things like sandblasting and powdercoating out to others. I've got my frame back and the axles all done. I lost some of my pics and videos of the teardown. could you help me out with a few closeups of the front suspensionfrom underneath ie, shackle eyelets, steering gear box, and the sway bar brackets that mount to the frame on the sway bar brackets on the bottom of the frame there is a raised area that a recessed area on the bracket sits over but not the same size, does a rubber grommet go in there or a washer?
My motor and tranny are getting painted the same silver you've got on yours but with a blue that matches the body. I picked a 2009 porsche metallic blue and painting the rollbar, nerf bars bumpers the silver to match. great work and thanks for letting me try to stumble in your footsteps.

You're getting your money's worth out of that rack Dave. In many ways it's working better than a rotisserie would have.
Hey I know all about making a mistake then kicking myself for doing it. My butt ought to be sore considering all I've wished I could do over again.
Like Scott said though, it ought to last you for 30 years and by then us older guys won't be too concerned anyway.

Hey Dave, That body is going to be straighter and better than it was from the factory.

I started about nine this morning and stripped the paint off the firewall. I decided to flip the rack so I could work standing up on the majority of the tub.

Glad to see you back at work Dave.
Boy am I sorry you have the neighbors you have. I'd be tempted to just keep right on going even if they call the law. I'd sure ask them about their business that's against the code. I'm sure you're looking forward to the time when you can move.
Hope you're feeling better too!!

What a bunch of D-bags. I would invite her to call the police. You ought to have a fence company come out and give you a free estimate... when you know they are home just to F with them.
Do they complain when you run the lawn mower? What about a chain saw?

Sorry to hear about your neighbors. My neighbors are cool because they always need work done on their cars or computers and they always come to me. The HOA hates me but they can kiss it.

HOA + jerk neighbors = huge PIA. Sorry to hear you live next to AHole's. I'd lay odds any cop that comes out on a call will take a look at your build and become real disinterested in what your whinny neighbors are complaining about, especially since it's during the day and you're not working at 2 in the morning. Next time you see her Husband, tell him to man up and grow a set.
I hope you can deal with it until you can move away from idiots like that.

In ca, your noise has to be maliciously disturbing their piece... I'm not sure how the law reads in Texas, but working on your jeep should be in the same vein as mowing your lawn!!!
I had neighbors like that, a couple houses ago, that is one of the reasons I moved out to the country!!! I'm back in a rural area now, but I have good neighbors, they don't complain about my noise during the day and I don't complain about their noise at night!!!
I don't know what people are thinking, really!!!!!!
Anyway, the progress is awesome!!! I hope your neighbors don't kill the fire!!!!! Keep up the good work!!!

She actually threatened you with the Cops?? The only state I know that has noise limitations during daylight hours is California. But then, I don't know everything about every state! The grinder itself is probably under 85 dB. The grinder against the metal tub is what may push it over the limit. Are you using a wire wheel? It could make it fall below the limit if there is a problem with noise. Maybe tape some foam to the backside of the tub for a sound-deadener.
IMO, you have been more than patient with them. You have the right to work in your yard. If she had a legal means to fight you she would have already gone to the HOA... since you don't mention any problems with them, she is bluffing.
Call the County Sheriff's Dept, and tell them what you are doing. Ask them about noise laws. You will KNOW the answer the next time she comes over to complain. If everything is hunky-dory with them, ignore your neighbor... they will sell their house soon!!
Don't worry about the kids on the trampoline. They don't care what you are doing... they're KIDS! They are busy playing and not paying you any attention.
PS- Remember the chicken litter...

Bet that is 85 db at the location of who ever is complaining. A lawn mower is probably more than 85db.
If it's 85 at the source, I'm gonna start calling and complaining when the neighbors start mowing their lawns and weed eating at 7:30 am on weekends.
