Dash Mod: Hmm .. not sure

Project: 81 CJ-8

Okay .. so I didn't want the stereo in the dash .. at least not the normal solution, was thinking the tuffy metal console with the stereo in it .. but while driving I find I want a way to see what I'm listening to .. name of the song, etc; so I thought I'd try this little device by Kenwood

The Display and Control, as well as the sub-chassis box, are all separate, so I thought I'd put the display in the dash some how .. this is what we came up with:

Notice the stock ashtray location .. slightly modified.

and these are with the display just sitting in place .. the dash panel is primed. As you can see, we already filled in the stock stereo opening.

Was also thinking of modifying the stock ashtray so it could be attached over the display, when not being used, to conceal the modification.

Comments?

Looks nice. Clean.

That's way too high tech for a CJ, it will never work

Looks good.

Beat it to fit, paint it to match!

I've never seen an ash tray there before, was that an option or model year specific? I've only ever seen the ones mounting under the dash.

Looks good. My only concern would be that is a damp location when raining...at least in my CJ it is......

Question:
With where you are locating the display, wont you have clearance issues with the defroster duct OR is the Kenwood device sufficiently thin enough not to cause an issue?

But cool idea. I like the thought of concealing the receiver but still have viewability.

I HAD a nice CD player when they 1st came out, 100 years ago. When the b-tards couldn't steall it, they smashed it to bits! They did leave the 3, 100 dollar bills taped to the bottom of the floor mat!

My stereo is under lock and key. When my buddy got his non working tape deck stolen out of his jeep, I knew what I had to do.
I hate to bring you idea down, but I'm just telling you what I have seen.

The other thing that works, if you don't want radio, but at least tunes, is a marine 2 channel amp and a 3.5mm jack to RCA splitter. Mount it up under the dash, and either run the 3.5mm pigtail out to plug into a ipod/phone/etc. or you can buy a jack that is basically a female to female connector that fits in a ~1/4" hole. Nothing to see, nothing to take. And a 2 channel amp can be had for under $40.

For me personally, I prefer that to a stereo, because I'd rather listen to my playlist if i'm cruising than the garbage that is on the radio anyway. And a CB w/ WX to check on the weather or other conditions. The truckers will tell you what is going on before the news will anyway.

But I will add that I do like the clean look of that install.
