Dash Lights

I swapped out the switch in the dash and the floor board..

Headlights work. Emergency brake light works. but nothing else does..

Do i need to have all the gauges and indicator lights connected for them to work?

I'am replacing the dash so its off want to make sure all the lights work before i put it back on.

Not sure what you still have disconnected, but the dash panel grounds to the body. Ground the panel and maybe it will work.

Also double check the fuses. I have been spending all day working on my dash lights. First thing I checked was the fuse. Multimeter checked it out fine. Replaced everything in the cluster. Would get the lights to work, get the cluster back in, it would work fine then just go out. After pulling the darn thing out 4 times I noticed that after I would get the gauges back in and they would go out, I would check the fuse with my tester while in the fuse box the lights would come on then go out.

Looked at the fuse and one of the spades was ****eyed and when I would shove the tester in it would push it back straight. Replaced the fuse and everything was good. Fuse looked fine but was physically broken.

i have nothing connected right now ... just the bulbs.. Ill try that tomorrow ... connect everything and ground the panel.. ill also go through the fuses again..

just so i know the lights wont work unless all gauges / indicator lights are connected and the dash is ground...?

Yep, the dash/instrument panel has to be grounded.

No problem. Felt the same way after the fuse debacle. Wouldn't you know that the first advice my wife gave me was to check the fuse.

I will hear about that a few more times in the next 5 years.

No, you can be missing lights or they can be burned out and the rest will still work with the grounded dash panel.

That new switch also has a ground wire on it that connects to the lip under the steering column.

heres what i found....

the orange lead to the indicator lights and the dash light cluster is not getting power.

i jumped a hot lead on to them and they work..

does anyone know where the orange lead ends up???

forgot to add:

temp/gas gauge work

flashers/hazards/highbeam/E-Brake lights work (havent tried the 4x4 let)

Theres power at the volt and oil but they never worked

got some more info...

download a wiring diagram for cj's

the wire is called ORANGE 18

i traced all of them back to a box on the diagram ---FUL Wire Name is (11a ORANGE 18)

This one wire controls OIL/VOLT/3x Cluster Lights + All 6 Indicator Lights..

Any help finding where this wire ends up in the jeep would really be appreciated. All i see is the FUSE BOX when i look on the inside

i found the diagram at the following site: the box in question is located above the fuse box on the diagram:

Yup, the fuse panel. The power comes from the headlight switch (red 18ga.) and goes to the fuse panel, then to the dash lights - orange 18ga.

Well don't forget the rheostat in the headlight switch. The actual path is through the first fuse that controls both the dash lights AND the parking lights. Then it travels through the rheostat back to the fuse box and through another fuse out to the dash lights.

Something like this:


Make sure you got the right switch!!!!
Your head lights work but do your parking lights work also?

The CJ's used two different switches and are not interchangeable.

just tested the 66 red w/ white wire off of the dash light switch...

i tested with the old switch and the new . i put the tester in where the wire is at the clip (while the switch was installed) and turned on the lights there was no power.

could both switches be bad?

all the lights work except for the 3 cluster on the speedo / oil/volt and 6 indicator lights.

e-brake/flashers/high beam/ headlights work also reg & high beam..
