Dana 44 carrier bearing cap replacement

I have a dana 44 from a scout II and it is missing the carrier and the bearing caps. Is it possible to buy replacement caps or use caps from a different dana 44 along with another carrier. I plan on installing a locker and changing the gears to 4.56.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The caps are like engine main bearing caps.. fit to the housing and honed to final tolerance.

I had a buddy who bought a D44 like yours (without caps). He went to a junkyard and dug around in the axle pile.. grabbing about a dozen caps. He tried them all until he found a pair that were a relatively good fit (no detectable lip at the parting line between the cap and housing). He ran the axle with those caps for a few years without problems.

thanks. I have another question...probably stupid, but do I need a carrier if I am going to put in a locker or does that replace it?

That depends on which or what type of locker you choose, both are available.
