Post Dana 44 axle build up

I have a 1974 CJ5 w/ Dana 44 30 spline rear axles. I recently replaced the bearing in the passenger side axle and I went with the recomendation in JP Magazine concerning the buildup. I left out the inner seal and am letting the gear oil lube the bearing. Is this a common thing to do? I was hesitant about this and even called a differential shop and they said as long as the outer seal doesnt leak and I have plenty of differential fluid I will be fine. The outer seal isnt leaking and so far no problems but I kept the inner seal just in case. I was curious if anyone has done this and if so did they incounter any problems with this.
Thanks Jim
