Dana 300 Shift Question

Hi. I'm trying to figure out how to shift a 1980 CJ5 with a Dana 300 into 4wd. Can anyone tell me the positions? How many? From the seat to the firewall? The shift lever has no label on it.
Thanks for the help.

If you looked at the shift knob it would look like:

4L
N
2H
4H

Thanks for the quick replies. It feels like it only has 2 positions...... Or at least those are the 2 that it goes into as of now. They seem to be the 4H and 2H positions. When I engage 4H the light on the Speedo goes on and says 4 wheel drive engaged.

I have the hubs locked if that matters an I'm also jigging the clutch a lil in first to get her rolling a lil bit as other posts suggested. Any help or ideas would be appreciated

With the engine OFF and the transmission in Neutral, the T-Case should shift freely into all modes.

It doesn't. Rut row. Now what?

If it is tight, lock the hubs, throw it in 1st or 2nd and give it a good rockin.... you may just be a little bound up

Still a no go. I clearly have 4H and 2H. I blasted it with some Kroil. I'll let it soak then try again. If I can't get N and 4L is this a transfer case issue? Lots of leaks under this thing at the diff seals.

nex step crawl under and look. you should have two rods connected by a "saddle" that joins your tcase shift lever, it cams over as you shift up and pulls the levers into their detents. While under (with goggles) have girlfriend shift the entire range and report back!

Success. I see the rods and linkage. I kroiled them up and worked it back and forth while jerking off the clutch. This bad boy was stuck but good. You can tell when it hits 4L cause it lowers down and grabs up.

Only problem now is I lost that nifty lil 4wd indicator on the speedo? Over travel or too much lube? Thanks for all the help so far guys. I appreciate it. I'd be lost without it.

Sometimes you need to back up 4-5 feet to take the load off the drive line.
Do your T'case shifting while in a straight line.
2 H to 4H you can shift while moving. Stop or no faster than a VERY slow walk to go to 4LO.
Not uncommon to have to stop and back up a few feet to get the t'case from 4LO to 2H or 4H.

Wow so true. I had to back up to get out of 4L. I'm just happy it's working now. That and checking out the frame were all that were keeping me from moving ahead with a restore and both pass the test.
BIG THANKS GUYS.

no prob, glad to help!!

Follow the little orange wire on the top of your Tcase and wiggle it around, should lite up your dash. They get pretty gummed up

I find it helps to cut the wheel a little, and rock it some.....

Maybe its not going into 4l as far as it the shifter and shift rails can and that's why you're not getting the 4wd light while in 4LO possibly hitting the tunnel cover.
