Dana 300 rebuild?

I want my dana 300 overhauled. Not sure if I should get the Novak rebuild kit and try it myself or sent it out. I did a partial rebuild of my sm465 when I replaces the output shaft with one fron Novak. Can anyone comment on how difficult dana300 rebuilding is?

I'm pretty sure there's some write-ups on the web...at the very least write-ups on installing a 4:1 kit which will also cover the rebuild...google it.

I would say that, if you can tinker around in a SM465, you can do the Dana 300. It's not very difficult. You'll need a pair of snap ring pliers, a gear puller and access to a bearing press. Just lay the parts out on a table as you take them apart. HERE'S a link to JB Conversions' Instructions for the Lomax kit. It's pretty good.

Ditto what BERSK said. The first trans, tcase I had ever rebuilt was my 3.15:1 kit in my Dana 20. If you can handle the trans work you'll be fine in the tcase. I sure the Novak kit will have good instructions.

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.

I did the teralow 4-1 kit myself, took awhile because I wanted to make sure everything was right before I reinstalled it. Basic tools plus a grinder and snap ring pliers as mentioned above are a must. Plan on a solid day or two.

It's not that difficult to rebuild the 300.Having access to a shop press makes it easier. The rebuild kits vary in price depending on where you buy it($110-$175).Novak has a a good instruction sheet.
