Dana 30 U-Joints (OEM vs. Spicer)

I want to replace the U-Joints in my Dana 30. Ones needs to be replaced, its clunking a little, and the other side just because I figured I should just do both at the same time. It has 4.10s, Detroit Trutrac, and the CJ-7 is lifted 4 inches with 33sx12.5s. My question is, would you replace with a stronger U-Joint, and transfer the weak link to somewhere else, or just replace with the cheap OEM unit? I have heard both arguments and was curious to hear your thoughts. :cheers2:

Get the stronger ones, alot of times when ujoints break they take out the balljoints, not a good idea to have them as the weak link.

get spicers. It is a good thing to have them as the weak link but strong enough to not break so easy. Reason I say they should be the weak link is I would rather break a joint than a shaft, or gears, or a locker. Personally I havent seen a broken u joint be the reason for broken ball joints.

I have and changing ujoints on the trail is no fun. If you break a shaft or ring and pinion you can just unlock the hubs and drive home, if you have no balljoints you're not driving anywhere. Ujoints are cheap but the damage they cause when they break can be expensive, besides the balljoints they also damage the ears on the axleshafts when they break so investing in good ujoints is a very good idea.

I run spicer 760x nongreasebales..Stock shafts held 33x10.5 locked. Now on 31x10.5's locked..next will be 215/85 locked. Yes I went backwards:P

Big down to small cause its a dd & expo rig, not a crawler.

I love Wayne's videos! Hours of entertainment there (and you'll learn something - maybe not what you were looking for, but you'll learn *something*).

CJ Dana 30s won't accept the larger 297s or 760s. CJ's use the 260x

Regarding the thread title, the OEM was Spicer.

I understand that OEM was spicer, but why the big difference between OEM and Spicer on quadratec then? I have already replaced my driveshaft ujoints with spicer, but I was worried that having spicer on my dana 30 work transfer the weak link to somewhere in the 30 itself. I am just not ready to build the 30 up at this point. I have way too many other projects before doing that.

If your referring to the ones that Quadratec is selling for $20, that is not OEM. OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer and only Spicer was the OEM brand. Those ones for $20, who knows who made them. Just because their webpage says original parts replacement doesn't make them OEM.

Replacing the factory Spicer joints with a new set of Spicer joints isn't going to move the weak link to another part. Not sure why you think it would.

^^^This^^^

Why anybody uses Quadratech, 4WD Hardware, etc. for anything other than parts you can only get from them is beyond me. Everything from the specialty mail order places like these is more expensive.

Thanks fellas. Looks like I will be going with Spicer. Is there anything that should be replaced when doing the job, like wear items, or should I be all set? I've never done it before. Thanks.

Only thing I would add is the full circle clip upgrade:2thumbsup: The normal set has a c-clip & thats the weak point. With a full circle clip its much stronger & is how all the "alloy" shafts come.
