Dana 30 bearing replacement
It is time to replace my front wheel bearings and seals. I have no idea if the front axel is the original. I do know that it is a Dana 30 wide track.
After looking at the parts on QuadraTec I found there are 2 different size bearings. One size is 1.75" The other is 1 5/8". Is there any way to know what size I have without pulling them and measuring?
I reallly dont want to buy both sets to make sure I have the right bearings and seals.
I also saw something about spindle bearings. Do I need those also?

I'm not sure what the actual sizes are but all the wheel bearings I've seen have a larger "inner" bearing and a smaller "outer" bearing. These are the bearings that are inside the hub.. on the spindle.
There is also a small needle roller bearing inside the spindle... it keeps the axle stub shaft centered in the spindle..

You want to find a pair of numbers like this:
Set 45 and Set 47. These will refer to a pair of timken bearing numbers. The spindle bearing will be a small ring with a lot of needle bearings in it that just fit your stub axle. I don't know if set 45 and 47 are the right ones for your axle but it will be set something and set something.

You need both for each hub. Put the 1.75" on the inboard and 1.625" (1 5/8") on the outboard.

Are these numbers stamped on the axel?

Not that I know of. They are the part numbers on the Timken and the generic autozone set. I went Timken and just finished!. mostly. Its the bearings that pull up on the Autozone computer for my 80.

You might want to think about getting the spindle nuts and lock washers to replace as well. My PO(MORON!) had used a chisel to install them and they had to go.

I just put all of the hardware as well as major parts in my wishlist. I'll look it over one more time to make sure I have everything and then order this weekend.
While I have the axels out I am going to put in a lunch box locker, I'll order that at the same time.
BTW gojeepin was right about the bearing size. I misread the descriptions.
Thanks again.

If it's a WT axles it's not the original as Jeep switch to WT in 1982. Go to a parts store and tell them you've got a 1982-1986 CJ. Or just order them online for one of those years. They should all be the same parts numbers.
The spindle bearing 'probably' don't need replacing, unless the CJ has seen a lot of mud, sand, or salt. You will need to R&R the spindle to get at them, as they are pressed inside the spindle (they support the outer axle stub), and have their own set of seals. Mine were in excellent conditon, so I cleaned them, packed them with Mobil1 syn grease, and replaced the seals.
