Dana 20 transfer case. Hard to find 2WH

I've had my '75 CJ5 since 1979. I've always had this problem so I was wondering. When I shift from 4WD up thru neutral and into 2WD I never feel any indication that it's in. I'm guessing there should be some ball spring that clicks into a notch in the shaft.

Is this game of hit or miss typical for the DANA's?

Is there something I can look for externally that might indicate I'm missing something, like a long hole that should have a spring and steel ball in it?

It's not that much fun to get back on the road, Shift out of 4WD and as you accelerate, have the T-case pop into Neutral. Can't be good for the gears either.

it should not be that hard mine never was there is a spring and dentant ball in the shifter housing that could be hanging up but would have to pull the case to look at it

no way to see it by taking off the Boot and looking by the shifter? I guess not, The Case is pretty far behind the shifter.

OK though..it is a detent ball and spring setup. I thought it might be.
Thanks
