Crawl ration concern for mud...help!!!
I own a 1981 CJ7 pretty much stock(for now anyway) I'm starting with frame and body work first but will soon be to working on the axles and other drivetrain parts. Well my problem is this, I see so many people and magizines talking about rockcrawler this and rockcrawler that, and that is cool and all. But i aint got no rocks to crawl on mostly mud, mud, mud. Did i mention there's a lot of mud in western kentucky. Sure i know where some slightly rocky trails and stuff are but nothing like moutain trails out west.
I am going to be using a 258, T18, D300 combo...through a set of 82 Cj widetrack axles. I would put in a V8, different tranny, and axles but these are the parts I have to work with. I will be running 33" tires. It will see road during the week, trails on weekends hopefully. So any opinions on a crawl ration to shoot for...I'm like any other Jeeper...I see low gears and all else is forgotten. I've caught myself trying to set up ratios in the 100s...I need help before i do something stupid ![]()

I see no problem with a low crawl ratio even for mud. If it's too low just grab second gear instead of first! There, now you're in a higher gear and the overall ratio is higher also.

Ditto on the second gear or third... If that is still too low, stop before entering and use high range... LOL,
