Cranks but won't Fire

Well, we finally got some great weather here in Cincinnati, so I got the hard top off and went for a drive today. Everytime I would stop at a store or a friends house the engine had problems starting back up again. The starter would crank it's heart out, but it took an act of God to get it to actualy start. I found that if I popped the hood, pulled the oil dipstick, and then replaced it, the engine wouldn't crank AS LONG in order to start. What could cause this. Since it only happened when the Jeep had been driven for a while and the engine was warm, could the choke need to be adjusted? Any help would be great.

I had a similar problem on my 304 CJ - it turned out to be the ignition stator (AKA pickup, Hall effect sensor) inside the distributor - when it got hot it wouldn't restart. Like you, I found if I opened the hood it helped cool it down and it would start sooner.

The 258 uses the same sensor in the distributor - I found one at NAPA for $30, installed it and haven't had a problem in a couple years...

this may sound stupid and way off base but heck you never know,,, did you check your pcv valve? sometimes when a pcv valve is not working properly it will build up pressure in the crankcase and cause all kinds of weirdness. the only reason I sight this is that you say you pulled the dipstick out which would vent the crank case and the cooler air would help the excess gases to cool down.. pcv valve is cheap, to test it pull it out and shake it,, if it rattles its good, just a thought, you never know

If its broke I can fix it. if it isnt broke give me a minute!!!

Here's another thought--
The wiring harness (with wires to the coil) generally runs near the dipstick. Per chance, when pulling the dipstick, you may have been bumping the harness and closing an open circuit--like a loose terminal, damaged wire, etc.; however, that probably would not have a relation to warming up.
And yes--the choke could need adjusted; that would explain it's co-relation to heat.

I have had the same prob. with my jeep.. it turned out to be a bad coil. the coil would get hot and it would have to cool could be your choke.. but if it just took a while to start and kept going when it started i wouldnt say it was the choke. caus it would "choke" itself out.

I changed the oil today, and it helped. The old oil looked like it was crude...strait from the well. I still got weird looks from people when I would try to start it in parking lots, but oh well. I'll look into getting a new coil. Is that called a "Blaster Coil"?
