crack in crossmember

So, I've got a crack in the cross member in front of the fuel tank. This is the passenger side just above the rear axle. The rusty spot is where the bump stop came off. (Bolts snapped years ago when trying to install longer stops.) There is also a few globs of POR-15 dripping down. My thought to repair it is to grind and weld the crack, then put a small plate across the area. Is there a better approach?

You can get replacement cross members. Or you can weld it unless it is too rusted out.

Make sure you locate and drill the ends of the cracks before you weld.

That crack goes all the way through front to back. No ends to drill out. Took a while, but its fixed. Little nerve wracking grinding and welding right next to the gas tank like that.....
