Cost of T-176 Rebuild

Hey guys - my t176 is operating fine but has all kinds of strange noises (throwout bearing?) coming from it. The noise (a super fast rattle or vibration) is only present when the clutch is not engaged, as soon as I press the clutch in the noise quites dramatically. I believe it needs a rebuild and I am wondering how much a shop will generally charge. Say Aamco for example, what do you think they will charge vs. some local mechanic? Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

aamco probably will not rebuild it. they replaced mine with a rebuilt one from a tranny rebuilding company. my T-150 was $1295 for the trans and $400 for the install.

Just to put this all in perspective, I rebuilt my T-177 for about $125.00 in parts and tools. Spent a couple of days worth of time.

It's realy one of the easiest to do by yourself because it's light and simple.

Here is someone I used. They will rebuild for 500 bucks plus about 100 dollars in shipping. They sell a lot of trannys on e-bay. The shop is out of tennesee, ask for steve.

Just on buying the tranny alone, you spent more money than i did for my whole jeep! and all you ended up with was a t-150

of course, i'm a poor college student and had to pull my tranny and have it fixed by a local good ol' boy...at a cost of 40$.

So what this goes to show you Jeepe, if you have the time to pull the trans yourself, and wait to find somebody who can do it reasonably, you can save a lot of money.

From the description of your Jeep, the tranny is the weakest link. Why waste a dime to fix it, unless you don't wheel your rig much. Look to swap in a tranny with more backbone, t-98, t-18, np435. jeeptech.com has good info on what swaps in nicely.

I've got a tranny/transfer from a 1979 CJ if you want it. I think it's a T150 or something like that. Stock AMC20 transfer case too. Come get it if you want it. Columbia, Ct 06237

If you want a direct bolt in, the transmission will probably bolt up to the bellhousing, but the length of the 150/20 combo might be different than the 176/300 combo that he has, thus a longer or shorter drive shaft would be neccesary. Have to do some measuring.

I went from a T-150 to a T-177 and yes, you need different drive shafts.

I really appreciate the offer John. I'm not that far away from you either. The unfortunate thing is that I just put in 2 new driveshafts in the last 3 months and spent $600 doing so. Otherwise I would hop all over it. I like the T-177, I just need to get my courage up to yank the thing out and rebuild it. I have never done a tranny rebuild or pulled/installed for that matter and am a little hesitant to do it myself.

Don't forget Collins Bros in Dallas/Plano, TX. The last time I was on their site they had T-18 4spds, rebuilt, for under $1,000 exchange. If yiou don't want to rebuild, I'd try this. But my 2 cents says it is not your transmission. Replacfe the clutch, throwout bearing and pressure plate yourself. It really is not difficult. Just be patient. My son installed the double sided centerforce setup for his T-150 and he had never dropped a transmission. You have about a zillion people on this forum if you need help. You can do it with just some good ole Craftsman tools.
