Red face cloudy gear oil?

I had a slight leak from the rear diff cover, so I changed the gasket tonight. The bottom of the diff had some REAL cloudy oil in it, almost like chocolate shake. Where did the water come from? It hasn't rained here in MANY months! I hate to think how long it's been there, if it IS water. I've had the fluid changed (I thought!) recently, but that cover's been on for a year or more. The gear oil was floating, because the top level at the drain plug looked great!
I've got to do that MORE often!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

That would be water. Do you trail and do water crossings? Can get in there from the axle breather, or from leaky axle seals etc etc.

Jeep what else matters.
